Red Bull RB15

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

EDIT: Some differences in flap geometry in the y250 area. The new one being more pointy. Old one below.

Looking at the photos above Verstappen is using this

While Gasly is using this one

Old Wing (what Gasly used):
Image

New Wing (what Verstappen used):
Image
  • The main-element has been slightly raised in the regions where the Y250 vortex, lower edge vortex and the complimentary strake vortices are formed.
  • The angle of incidence at the outboard region has been backed off slightly.
  • The Y250 elements have been slightly changed particularly the uppermost element.
All in all, very much an optimisation exercise.

Gasly was also running a rear wing gurney flap whilst Verstappen wasn’t.

But that is not the new wing. That was the spec 1 wing that you show (that Verstappen has here) later they shorted one of those pointy extensions in order to make a slit in the lower one (and still adhere to the 5 elements). Like per the Gasly (say spec 2 wing) they did Ofcourse already have many endplate and upper element outwash changes.

Verstappen did ran a new wing but I don’t think this picture was it.

I think they've gone back to having standard 5 element without slit. These pictures are from fp3/qualifying today. The Gasly wing is a bit odd tbh because that doesn't feature the slit either so I assume that's the spec 1 wing.

Edit: Nope, I can just about make out the slit on the Gasly wing.

No this is the launch spec without the split tip flap. They both ran split tip but the main difference is in the main plane. Verstappens wing curves upward more agressively

Who else thinks that Verstappen had the power to fight today at the push of a button.

Its more tyres than power; the Haas that qualified P5 finished behind the Willaims of Russell. Gasly wrecked his hard tyres after few laps and almost fell to Sainz.

Is it just me, or is there a diff near the end plate. It looks like the wing leading edge is meeting the end plate at a higher point.
But just suppose it weren't hypothetical.

I still can't clearly see where this car is lacking! For example Ferrari clearly loses out in downforce.

-Engine power for sure is down a bit compared to Mercedes and Ferrari because even with DRS for Max, Leclerc was able to pass him with a little bit better exit!
-But the chassis don't seem so great either i think! They don't seem to have Mercedes's amount of downforce nor Ferrari's "low drag" advantage.
-The car seems like something in between Mercedes and Ferrari in terms of concept.

I don't know if Austria was an exception in terms of how fast RB is...at least i think so! I think it had more to do with Max overdelivering and Red Bull executing a great strategy with the mediums, something Mercedes didn't do for some reason!

..and they don't care to take an additional PU in later races where they stand no chance anyway. That's good for PU development and for the performance in single races like this, where, im my opinion, they used all the power they have.

Looking at the rear wing the updates are actually working. Its a lot skinnier than the opposition again. =D>

I suspect the real comparison has to be with mercedes. It s known that this year Ferrari has to run as much wing as possible due to the otherwise limited downforce from the bodywork.

A photo of bottas overtake would tell the real difference. Surely in favour of Redbull again.
