Second half of this story - "I'm a bit surprised because we had some serious pace," explained the Spaniard.
"Right from the start I managed the tyres instead of overtaking at the beginning as I wanted to create a bit of tyre delta for the last stint as my race was was going to get better and better with our tyre degradation.
"In the second stint I was very, very fast. I did the fastest lap at some point, and from there on I passed one car every lap in the midfield and then suddenly I saw myself behind Gasly and Lando, catching them half a second a lap.

What's the view on the uprated engine in Sainz car - he looked half a second quicker per lap than Norris on clearer laps? He also set one of the quickest times of the day in that middle stint - That would put McLaren within touching distance of the boys ahead if an accurate reflection ( stretching hope I know...)

Was similar to the difference between Ricciardo and Hulkenburg at the French GP so looks like a genuine pace increase?

His Set-Up was focused on the race only due to PU penalty... Couple of tenths there...
Hulkenberg said it’s worth 2 tenths, according to an AMuS article. So maybe a tenth extra, making 3 tenths, cause they may not be totally honest?
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

couple of posts awaiting moderation with the links on which should pop up shortly - but if not look at racefans website for the interactive lap times and only Sainz and Verstappen were consistently catching the leader between pit stops. Everyone else to varying degrees got further away.

They took the PU to avoid taking the penalty at Silverstone, that doesn't mean they actually used it.

Just a gentle reminder....This thread is about McLaren -Renault, so wild speculation abut Gasly, Kvyatt etc does not belong here. If you want to talk about teams, please make sure that you are using the correct team thread

Sainz clearly implied they did, as he was talking about frustration not to get to use the engine modes to see what it could do

Pat Fry leaving McLaren.... again..

I wish it could have been avoided, Fry is quality and a real McLaren man.

About that, how would that work. If they allowed you to take the penalty, and then not run the engine, couldn't you just take 5 penalties in one race, you get like +50 grid slot penalties but drop to 20th spot in any way. Then you use the remaining engines without penalty.

I doubt this is possible, so either you must use the engine you took or there is a different rule that makes these kind of shenanigans impossible.

did any one know why he(patfry) is leaving? He is the one who developed this year car and it seems we are getting good result. If any one have any information please post it here.

I think he was only there until James Key arrives.

Im not sure that is entirely true. The impression I got was that he was more a consultant type role, vetoing ideas more than creating them. I think it was always a short term arrangement

But from all indications, he slotted into the role/title that was vacated by Matt Morris i.e Engineering Director. Obviously, he lead the design team due to the absence of a Technical Director. But isn’t there still a need for an Engineering Director?

There is a rule in terms of how many engines you can “stock up”... But it’s possible for the team to take the penalty and revert to an older Spec during the race.

I doubt they actually did that, since in Austria a higher performance engine is a benefit, so Mclaren most probably used the new spec engine (which good results as we saw on Sunday).

The report implies that Key will take over his role circumventing the need for a dedicated department head for engineering.

Is that practical? Off the top of my head, I don’t know any team that operates that way, without a dedicated Engineering Director...
