As last year keep a close eye on sector 3. At the moment we’re 0.3s away from the RB16 and nearly 0.5s from the W11. Its only day 1 so I’m not going to read anything into it unless it becomes a trend. I sincerely hope we can close the gap quite a bit in the slow speed corners. Hopefully the longer wheelbase and updates to the front end are going to pay off

Teams haven't really pushed so far. Sainz has plenty of speed in S1 and S2 to tap into. I'm sure Renault is the same.

Turns 4, 5, 10, 11 - end of lap. Both cars are very similar, they are taking the same lines, and accounting for fuel and tires used I see very little difference. The rest of the field is harder to read, but McLaren and Renault stood out for me right away.

Sainz on a race sim probably, using C1. This is very similar to programme McLaren ran last year, few fast laps with cooldown and then a 8-10 stint in the morning. In the afternoon a race sim of 15-20 lap stints with pitstops in between and about 1 hour before the end they switch to a couple of fast qualy runs.

Good afternoon so far. Sainz already on 112 laps, just 11 behind RB and 9 behind Merc. Racking them up nicely!

Those are the best news of the day... It seems that the car isn’t suffering from any nagging issues and it’s capable of pulling an important amount of laps... It should also be important for the team to move the program forward as much as they can

25 mins later and Sainz now leads the lap count on 131, to RB and Merc both on 130.

133 laps on the board... Wonder if this is getting close to the most amount of laps the team have done in testing since 2015?

Did you guys see Carlos and Max mixing it up a bit?
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

Best lap in last lap. Good tyre management and/or not trying best pace during race sim?

We really don’t know what the run programme for the day could have been... The team may have used one stint to simply work on differential settings, therefore the driver needs to try and be as consistent as possible in order to understand which settings are better or what is their effect on the car.

Beyond lap times, the highlight today has to be the amount of Laps they managed to run on their first day of testing... Not sure about last season, but in the stint between 2015 and 2018, the first day was always really painful for Mclaren

I don't think anyone was pushing at all today, even Hamilton had plenty of pace in hand as he kept just turning it up in a different sector each time.
The McL was running sensor/camera pods most of the day too.
