FIA wants to ban qualifying modes in 2021

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

If Merc have renamed their modes, or if indeed they did not use a higher PU mode, then it is quite cute of them Basically saying, "if you are going after us with this TD, or you think it will slow us down, then you might want to think again".

They would probably just use a lower strat mode and reprogram or modify the effects of the push to pass buttton, they all have, to be able to use it more often during Q3 and get the same effect of using the party mode they use now.

I believe that the party mode just utilises the entire electric deployment available with no unnecessary harvesting leaving the battery depleted by the end of the lap,c coupled with max fuel flow and max revs.

I don’t believe they ban ERS charge & deploy strategies. Just ICE fuel & Ignition mappings.

Hoping for the 1 mode rule, now I'm looking at a Mercedes sprinting away as soon as anyone comes close while Toto keeps on downplaying their dominance. And the Mercedes saturday Q engine mode is clearly not within 3% of the other engine manufacturers so that should already have been dealt with long ago by the FIA.

The party mode also changes the timing of the ignition and injection and so on. Lots of things

Is there a reason the same changes can not be triggered at 13k RPM anyway and the driver told to stick to the normal 12.5 for normal driving? It is not a 'mode' as it would do that every time RPM hits 13k?

What good is qualli mode? if it is the same it is the same.

the quali mode setting would of practically zero use if they were only available above 13k rpm, if thats what youre proposing

It would have 'party mode' equivalent up to 15k if needed without the driver having to switch anything. If it is not needed continue to change at 12.5.

A new ore in this came from Sam Collins in the Sky chat today. He recons the Merc is just too powerful for the tyres and is tearing them up. Did the suggestion of reducing modes come from them? They are not going to give away an advantage they can not use if someone else can use it. But if it is no good to them, stop anyone else getting it too

when did you last see an f1 car rev to 15k rpm though? i highly doubt they do any of their reliability testing etc based on any significant usage of such rpm.

There is no advantage to doing so now due to max fuel flow. If it became the new 'qualli mode' there would be. There would be higher wear rates, but it would have to be accounted as party mode is now.

These cars have not seen 15K on the tach for the entire duration of this terrible 6 cylinder turbo hybrid era.

People applaud the "reliability of the engines nowadays" but that is because these things are tuned way, way down, so that they last.

F1 used to be about going in the other direction: pushing to the breaking point. That's why we used to see several engines failures pretty much every weekend. Everyone was pushing to the edge.

These things are revving like Indy Cars did in the 1980s.

The fact of the matter is Mercedes has .7/.8 sec up to 1 full second or a bit more advantage on the entire field, depending on the track.

And we all know Bottas is a very good driver but not in Hamilton's league.

So there really isn't a lot of intrigue in F1 these days.

It will be the same again next year.

Our only hope is when the new regs arrive, and we have to pray to God someone other than Mercedes gets them right.
