Just pointing out how wrong you are, and you claim Mercedes were fools for doing what they did, when it was the right thing to do. I can think of 1 good reason to take the penalty straight away, and then a fairly decent reason to take it straight away.

It doesn't matter if it was deliberate or not. If you drive over a red light and get caught, i guarantee you, you can't argue you way out with "oh, but i didn't it deliberatly." You drove over a red light and that's that. Doesn't matter why.
28.14 Under exceptional circumstances the race director may ask for the pit entry to be closed during
the race for safety reasons. At such times drivers may only enter the pit lane in order for
essential and entirely evident repairs to be carried out to the car. A penalty under Article 38.3(d)
will be imposed on any driver who, in the opinion of the stewards, entered the pit lane for any
other reason whilst it was closed.
38.3 The stewards may impose any one of the penalties below on any driver involved in an Incident:
a) A five second time penalty. The driver must enter the pit lane, stop in his pit stop position
for at least five seconds and then re-join the race. The relevant driver may however elect
not to stop, provided he carries out no further pit stop before the end of the race. In such
cases five seconds will be added to the elapsed race time of the driver concerned.
b) A ten second time penalty. The driver must enter the pit lane, stop in his pit stop position
for at least ten seconds and then re-join the race. The relevant driver may however elect
not to stop, provided he carries out no further pit stop before the end of the race. In such
cases ten seconds will be added to the elapsed race time of the driver concerned.
In both of the above cases the driver concerned must carry out the penalty the next time he
enters the pit lane and, for the avoidance of doubt, this includes any stop the driver makes whilst
a VSC or safety car procedure is in use.
c) A drive-through penalty. The driver must enter the pit lane and re-join the race without
stopping.
d) A ten second stop-and-go time penalty. The driver must enter the pit lane, stop in his pit
stop position for at least ten seconds and then re-join the race.
While it might happen once in a while, but becomes so much memorable for years to come. Like a 2008 Italian GP.

I think he was questioning it, because the team would have looked very foolish if there had been a safety car or a virtual safety car on the next lap.
What are you talking about? He finished P4 after starting the race P6... Made a great pass on Bottas into the second chicane... Managed to pass Perez and Bottas in the first stint and keep both of them behind...
