I would say that is very unlikely... But, it would seem that there is enough pace on the car to at least beat one of the Red Bull’s (Albon) in some races... Stranger things have happened :)

I’m not arguing if the rule is good or not... I’m just stating why it exists.

Exactly... It just didn’t work in our favor this time.

I understand the little disappointment after been so close to a win... But, the team is more P3 than ever in the WCC and we took great advantage on a weekend where the points where up for grabs... All in all a lot of reasons to celebrate!

Oh, that seems more like it - my eyes were wide after I'd looked at the motorsport.com list earlier which I now realise is broken for RP. Still, that's a healthy position and hopefully McLaren keep outperforming RP relative to the potential of their car. After testing and even the early races I doubted whether RP were beatable over a season, but what looked like some poor performances from them is becoming a pattern.

Re: the red flag rules, in the interests of fairness, practicality and safety I think they are as good as they can be. Sometimes you might get a benefit, other times like today for Carlos and Lando they'll work against you, but most importantly - Charles is okay. The barrier needed to be reset and safety taken seriously - not too long ago a hit like that would not have been something you jog away from.

What I saw as unfair is that some cars got away without a pitstop, which is mandatory in a normal race.
If a pitstop is part of every race, it should still have to be taken. Even if it allowed a car to go to the penultimate lap and grab softs for the fastest lap point.
When arguing with a fool, be sure the other person is not doing the same thing.

That’s probably my only issue with it... If a Pit Stop is mandatory and they didn’t necessarily “Pit” (in this case Lance, because Gasly did pit earlier)... Shouldn’t they be forced to pit?

On another note... Big Kudos to the team on the Pit Stops... What was one of the biggest weakness of the team, today helped get those points!

That's the issue, the rules doesn't state you have to stop, it just mandates you must run 2 different compounds. I agree with Lando's view that it's a bit unfair, the ability to change tyres under red flag is to cover possible damages sustained during the incident. The rules should state that any changes should be like for like, and force drivers to take the same compound. Of course, if my hat was pink I'd probably be saying it's all fair game.

So I do think the engine mode changes have brought RP within reach now. Renault will continue to be a threat, as will RP, but it seems fairly even between the teams. P3 would be a dream, but also a realistic target.

It will be quiet the second half of the season... We will continue to fight against RP and Renault, but days like today, where we are maximizing the scoring opportunity and out scoring the other 2 teams help a lot towards that goal.

The delta’s between the teams are very small as showed during qualifying yesterday and the drivers will make the biggest difference... P3 is indeed a realistic target, especially considering that the development rate against RP may help edge them towards the end of the season.

It was unfortunate if you were on the wrong side of it but I don't think that makes the rule itself unfair, It was equally 'unfair' a few laps earlier when most of the field got away with pitting under the safety car to benefit from a 'free' tyre change too. The only person that benefitted really was Stroll as Raikonnen didn't have the pace and dropped out of the points anyway.

Strictly speaking I don't think the rules actually mention having to take a pitstop at all, just that competitors have to use 2 compounds in a dry race. Though interestingly, if a dry race is cancelled and you've only used one compound upto that point, you get a 30 sec penalty.

The rules have to draw the lines somewhere and it's up to the FIA to put them in the best place to keep them clear and simple, without endless caveats. I think the points have been made already by others to take into account the 'what if's' like tyre availability, safety etc. and I until I see a convincing argument to improve this one, I still think it's fine as it is.

Edit - Basically what Xero said - I got distracted and finished my post off after him :)

I really really wanted Carlos to win it, my heartbeat for last 5 laps was like i am running up the mountain.... What i have hoped for was a P2 and P3 finish without safety car shenanigans, but it is what it is. The most positive side of the story is that outside contender won the race, AT is not jet in the fight for 3rd position in standings. Today, after so many years, i was finally able to watch a Mclaren fighting in the sharp end of the grid with its raw pace and by sheer force. Hamilton was unreachable for sure, but beating Bottas and both RedBulls was a giant victory by itself today.

Even though the journey was long and seasons 15,16,17 and 18 were really hard to watch, i am estatic how they have managed to pull themself together and start climbing up the order again.
Step by step.
If i would get the money to start my own F1 team, i would revive Arrows

In RP’s defense... They could have pitted before the race was red flagged during the second Safety Car, they decided to stay out and got the benefit of the red flag afterwards.

Norris "So, yeah, Carlos, did a good job."

“From my side I still think I did a good job. It wasn’t a podium but I think that was out of our hands. As a team, though, we did the best job today.”

Pressed further on his comments about being able to change tyres in a red-flagged race, he said: “I think it should be taken out.

“I think we have the two examples. We’ve got Gasly who boxed just before [the Safety Car], he was ahead, the race gets red flagged and that’s fair. You can’t do anything about that. But for someone who just hasn’t boxed [like Stroll] they have just gained 24 seconds for doing nothing.
“He should still have to pit. You can get lucky doing what Pierre did but I think that’s still just fair play. But not having to box and not having to use that mandatory pit stop is a thing that I don’t think is right.”
