Lando Start Part 1 of the race.
Lovely start. Very un-Norris-like aggression. He knew he had to take Bottas as the chance would slip away after the first sector, and he straightup went for it. I like.
Great stuff from Lando. No wonder he was so miffed about losing a possible podium.

Good article.

"F1 Hall of Fame journalist David Tremayne looks at McLaren's rise from the back of the grid towards the front and how the Italian Grand Prix showed that they are well on their way..."

Regarding the Sainz vs Gasly battle, I think that probably he could be more aggressive and try to dive in the inside of T1 in the penultimate lap. Here we see the distance to the leading cars when both of the leading cars were in the 150 meter brake board. Riccardo in this case (2016 against Bottas) made the move stick from equally far back, if not further. Obviously, it's risky and requires the "cooperation" of the car ahead because you can switch from hero to zero in nano-seconds but worth to see. Also, I think McLaren has been traditionally strong on the brakes, so this was his one and only real shot at the victory.

Here's the thing though. Daniel had had wins let alone podiums at the point he made that overtake. Carlos on the other hand was set for his first (proper) podium result last weekend. I bet for Carlos there was a lot of pressure to not mess up even when a victory was within his grasp because there was a chance he could throw it all in the bin. And it's bad for both the team and the driver because the points are very important for the team's battle for third too.

Yeah maybe if Daniel was driving that car last weekend he may have won it, but I totally understand Carlos for playing it a bit safe and I am not at all upset about the result because it was overall a great weekend for the team with some great points to help with that battle for third on the constructors.

It would be nice if you could add the tire age and race distance in both cases. Also worth considering: Lewis on Kimi 2007.

Just to touch on the whole changing tyres under red flag situation. Perhaps the rule could state that, if you change tyres under red flag and do not make visit to the pits at any other point in the race, then you will have a time equal to the fastest pit stop (including entry/exit etc) of any other driver added to your final race time.
No where in the rules does it state you have to make a pit stop, just that you have to run 2 different sets of dry tires. As you are allowed to make changes and change tires during red flag conditions everything is within the rules...
I think they just should add a 5 sec stop and go penalty and be done with it. Basically say no tire changes BUT if you REALLY have to, pay the piper.

So a race leader should be sent to the back of a closed up grid after a restart if he was just about to change his tyres before the red flag and come back in maybe, say 1st to 5th?

Why?

He could just go out on the used tyres for a lap and change 'em after the safety car.

The issue is if there's tyre damage from debris.

Then he’d still end up at the back of the grid

We could debate what would/wouldn’t be fair and to whom all day long. There is NO fair way to deal with situations like this. In my opinion Lando was wrong branding it a stupid rule. If he would have been in Stroll’s shoes he would not have thought it stupid

All of this talk is a distraction from the real issue...

why was a full safety car called when the car was well out of the way and on the pit lane entry? Wasn’t the VSC designed for such incidents

the full SC combined with the closed pit preventing a normal SC period is what caused this issue. In reality it should have been the early putting cars that suffered NOT the front runners

The subsequent red flag that allowed Stroll to change his tyres is a Very rare situation indeed, he benefitted from it, so so what? There have been plenty of race winners that have benefited from timely safety cars, (just ask Alonso & Fabio  )

In my opinion race control purposefully used the full SC deliberately to cause the situation where the front runners were punished to try to artificially alter the result. This is unacceptable to me

This is a sport and the FIA should try to do all they can to preserve the integrity of the result

They should have either used VSC OR allowed cars to pit under full SC before closing pit lane and removing the car

And don’t even get me started on why Kmag decided to park his on the pit lane entry... could he have not coasted the extra few meters down it???

Marshals lifes matter

Edit: to be more precise, I agree spicying the race up probably was a bonus in stewards balance, but main reason is safety. Since Bianchi death stewards and FIA are consistently conservative safety wise, which I think is good even if the race is affected. Actually main problem of current F1 is predictability, so a bit of uncertainty in the name of safety is good for most, specially for marshals who need to go into the track to push a car, replace damaged barriers, etc, even if (put your favourite name here) suffer in this particular race

You're missing the fact that Daniel is on some nice soft tyres at the end rather than older mediums
