McLaren MCL35

The cover that hides the suspension elements seems to be slightly different, more pronounced hills, which may hide other suspension elements.

New nose for Norris... looks like it’s here to stay

Just need to see what Carlos is running. Maybe they will go different ways more more evaluation

If Qualifying is any indication... The new nose seems to be a bit of a compromise with the current package... Carlos and Lando are usually around a tenth of each in qualifying, the gap in Qualifying at Sochi seems to be around 3 tenths, part of that gap is probably the nose.

Losing nearly 3 tenths to Daniel on that first sector, and surprisingly there's barely any difference in Sector 3.
They lost everything in those first 3 corners. Which are considered fast corners? It was supposed to be the advantage this car has over Renault according to the team, and actually Daniel said that the McLaren could carry more speed through Ascari in Monza. So very interesting that they are losing out so much time in this occasion.

Carlos mentioned that the wind direction changed for quali from fp3 and that compromised their balance a bit. That's probably the main reason for this deficit as it has now become apparent that this car is very sensitive to wind.

I am wondering if the results would have been different if the track maintained the same condition from fp3.

Do we know for sure whether they have to continue running the new nose once it's homologated or whether they can return to the old spec for future races?

Surely the FIA couldn't force teams to use the new spec - what if they didn't have enough spare parts after a crash for example?
Favourite driver: Lando Norris
Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

That’s a very good question... I believe they have to continue running it on both cars from the next race however firstly you have to consider it is only the front crash structure that is contained within the nose that is Homologated, not the FW mounting pillars or any of the aero fairings

22.1.3 From the defined freeze date, the specification of HC may not change for the remainder of the 2020 Championship
22.1.4 - c. In the case an HC component has been revised either through the use of tokens, or before its homologation date but does not meet the Competitors expectations, it will be permitted to revert back to the original specification of this HC component within five Competitions from its first introduction.
If the 2 noses contain the same crash structure then they would be able to swop between the 2 options

If the crash structure differs, then from the next race the team must only use the either the old or the new version for the rest of the season and next year too, but can permanently revert back to the old version within the 4 races

To me it looks like the 2 noses do contain different crash structures, but my mind remains open to the possibility that in theory the crash structure in both versions could be the same. I would be interested to hear others thoughts on this... is it technically possible?

Planet F1:
McLaren, despite acknowledging that the new nose is not yet delivering performance, chose to keep it on Norris’ car.

Team boss Seidl explained why:

“We are happy with how the nose was working,” he told The-Race after qualifying.“The reason why Lando kept the nose on was because he did the main work yesterday, and with the crash Carlos had in the morning he only had the opportunity for one lap, which just wasn’t enough.

“We’re quite restricted at the moment, with the number of parts. That’s the reason why Lando is running it.“It did what we expected from it yesterday, in terms of performance compared to the baseline at the moment it’s not a step forward really, because it’s just the beginning of a package we bring over the next couple of races.

“We obviously then hope that we can make a good step forward in terms of performance.“It’s a new development direction, where we see a lot of potential going forward with ongoing developments for this year but also for next year.

“And that’s the reason why we investigate this direction.”

They've been pretty adventurous with the cape since its introduction so it's likely the current design is more a proof of concept before more complex iterations arrive.
