As expected s3 being our weak spot. Fundamentally slower in the 90deg slow/med cornering bonanza
Mclaren aren’t able to upgrade their suspension either for 2021 if I’m not mistaken?

I don't think anyone really can. It's what you can do with 2 tokens. Think minor tweaks to rear suspension are required for the change in PU

The biggest problem is they've had this weakness for many years now. For at least the last 8 years they have never been better than average at slow speed corners.

Let’s be honest, it’s Mercedes title again next year anyway

The focus has to be on ‘22 when all teams will have to run a much simpler suspension system using only springs and dampers.. clever hydraulic systems used by the Mercedes and their clone are banned

This should help

Agreed. In 2022, they'll still have this issue. It's a mechanical grip suspension thing.

Yeah its honestly very dissapointing they havent done a better job at solving the slow speed deficit,
Well we need to get 5+6 this weekend and stroll after and perez nowhere

Decent pace in FP2. The midfield is insanely close, but the Maccas are right up there.

Needs more front wing. They understeer because of the aero balance.

Its clear to see the gap between top teams like Merc, Redbull and the rest widening at tracks with relatively higher percentage of slow speed corners.

The midfield teams have to run higher downforce to be competitive in S3 but that would mean they will be no where in S1 and S2. The mechanical grip advantage that the top teams enjoy is insane and and a result they dominate fiddly slow stuff .

Among the midfield teams McLaren naturally struggle more mechanically, than teams which borrow suspension from top teams . However Renault despite having indigenous suspension has done a relatively better job than McLaren mechanically.

That sector 1 is surprising to be honest. It's one nearly 90 degree corner followed by two flat-out corners. I am guessing whatever the deficit is to AlphaTauri, Ferrari and RP, isn't very significant.

Yea that’s what I thought... so we are locked into this for another year

On your other point, if we are being fair, Mclaren developed that front suspension which lowered the front end and therefore the front wing towards the ground increasing the front wing performance until it got banned.
So it hasn’t been all bad from Mclaren on the suspension front, it wasn’t praised that much because the 1-2 tenths it gave us were being wiped out by the seconds being lost by the Honda PU

Yeah, 2018 really stained McLaren's reputation, but I firmly believe that they had a very decent car in 2017. Perhaps not the best like some people claimed, but it would have probably been good enough to challenge RedBull with a more powerful engine in the back. The MCL-32 was very good mechanically, and aero was decent for the time too. Towards the end of the season that car was building up nicely (remember Alonso Q1 in Mexico).

Too bad they couldn't carry that momentum over in 2018. That concept turned out to be ultimately flawed but I wonder how much did the late engine change compromise that car.

Did Carlos have a fast lap in FP2?

It was mentioned by the Sky team that he hit traffic on S3 during his quali lap. However, I did not see it myself so can't say for sure.
