I'm not sure what the problem is, navigation has always been part of the game, this year you just need to be even more on it. Maybe time to change his navigator.
I also think the gymkhana is a bad comparison. Gymkhana are pretty much choreographed, the opposite of what limited prior knowledge of the route means.

Actually it was both, I´ve also hear him complaining later. He even said this dakar is focused to navigators more than drivers.
