I was referring to the sidewall aspect ratio, rather than the overall size.JordanMugen wrote: ↑24 Feb 2021, 23:29The 18" tyres on the tourers are 680mm in diameter, 10mm bigger than the 2021 F1 tyres, and 45mm smaller than the 2022 F1 tyres.![]()
But being identical 18" tyres and having a smaller overall size, the sidewall aspect ratio is by definition considerably less than those that F1 will run?djos wrote: ↑24 Feb 2021, 23:31I was referring to the sidewall aspect ratio, rather than the overall size.JordanMugen wrote: ↑24 Feb 2021, 23:29The 18" tyres on the tourers are 680mm in diameter, 10mm bigger than the 2021 F1 tyres, and 45mm smaller than the 2022 F1 tyres.![]()
I never used the word "identical", I merely used SuperCars as an example of a wheel and tire combo that worked well with curbs and didn't have a super-low profile sidewall (in contrast to the old super tourers).JordanMugen wrote: ↑24 Feb 2021, 23:32But being identical 18" tyres and having a smaller overall size, the sidewall aspect ratio is by definition considerably less than those that F1 will run?djos wrote: ↑24 Feb 2021, 23:31I was referring to the sidewall aspect ratio, rather than the overall size.JordanMugen wrote: ↑24 Feb 2021, 23:29

V8 Supercar
305/380 R18
Formula One
265/725 R18 (front)
405/725 R18 (rear)
Converted into standard terminology, the V8 Supercar tyres are a 35% aspect ratio and the Formula One tyres are a 50% aspect ratio front and 45% aspect ratio rear.
V8 Supercars have much more imaginative ways of destroying wheels (and cars) than just riding over kerbs. That lot are mad!
100% agreed!Just_a_fan wrote: ↑25 Feb 2021, 01:15V8 Supercars have much more imaginative ways of destroying wheels (and cars) than just riding over kerbs. That lot are mad!![]()

I see no reason for 18" (or 19" or 20") tyres to impair the ability of a Formula One car to utilise the optimal shortest racing line through a corner.Just_a_fan wrote: ↑25 Feb 2021, 01:15V8 Supercars have much more imaginative ways of destroying wheels (and cars) than just riding over kerbs. Erm, the pictures don't support your argument...JordanMugen wrote: ↑27 Feb 2021, 00:02I see no reason for 18" (or 19" or 20") tyres to impair the ability of a Formula One car to utilise the optimal shortest racing line through a corner.Just_a_fan wrote: ↑25 Feb 2021, 01:15V8 Supercars have much more imaginative ways of destroying wheels (and cars) than just riding over kerbs. I think that graphic is wrong.FW17 wrote: ↑28 Feb 2021, 04:26How is it the formula e tyre is so different in outer dimensions in comparison to f1?

https://www.michelin.com/en/documents/f ... ong-beach/The MICHELIN Pilot Sport EV was developed especially for Formula E and has several specific features. Equivalent to road tyre sizes of 255/40R18 (front) and 305/30R18 (rear).
Because it's not ideal for racing. However the super high sidewall isn't either great for control over suspension either. So they compromised.
