2021 car comparison thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Is it better to align the T-cams or the lights/diffusers in your opinion?

Wait does the McLaren have brake duct winglets below the step plane?

Yes. The brake ducts/winglets are defined relative to the wheel hub not the reference plane.

Red Bull following the Mercedes route trying to clear the air above the diffuser. Nice to see them trying a different method though of just raising the suspension. I'm guessing that's easier than doing what Mercedes did.

But Merc still has the cleanest cocke bottle area, thanks to it's 'invisible' pull rod (pink) that is mounted so high that most of it can hid behind the bodywork and avoid the way that goes to the diffuser.
Ferrari is similar in this aspect since a couple of seasons, their pull rod is also mounted quite high on the gearbox... but obviously the lower wishbone front arm is still in the way.
RB and MCL is the other way around.
AM is obviously the same as Merc now.

I wonder if teams will copy the complete Merc geometry in 2022

Would mounting the pushrod higher make it shorter and thus lower motion ratios giving you a smaller tuning window? In McLaren and RBR's case they have very long pushrods and large motion ratios giving them more fine tuning control over damping and spring rates.

Perhaps RB felt it was worth the compromise of having the pullrod in the way by moving the suspension mounting down low allowing a more aggressive undercut at the rear of the car.

I was about to post the same. RB perhaps make up for it with the narrower gearbox casing.

They have run that pullrod design for years now. It's always been connected at the floor like that.

The length of the pushrod doesn’t matter, the angle does. Both RedBull and McLaren have their pushrod so far away from the actual motion (by being swept forward) that there will be difficulty to have the same level as precision as a pushrod that is more in line with the axle.

There's so much internal ducting, no wonder these cars are so heavy
