How much this pole is due to Red Bull`s car/Max qualy pace and how much is down to Merc understanding they couldn`t beat them (at least here) on raw qualy pace, therefore they`ve focused more on race car setup?

Alonso is so slow...

With Ocon P8 a top driver like RIC or past ALO could have been P6

Let’s wait until Barcelona to see the full picture of teams and drivers

Vettel had to slow down for yellow flags. That's not what I call "outperform".
The grid position tells the story. Stroll has the edge on Vettel as many expected, myself included.
Yeah. When you're living in your own little world where double-waved yellow flags don’t exist.

Four tenths. Purple in all sectors. High top speed. Balanced poise through the corners.

I smell dominance.
One driver is not even in the top 10. Both Mercs are both top 3. It's only Max that made that pole.
3/10s in Q2 between them. Perez would have been top 4 had he got through Q2. Q2 was odd and I think caught out RBR.

Exactly. Dont be hard on Perez, If he was in Q3 with the same gap he had to Max in Q2, he would be on the front row.

Max's pole lap onboard looked just like a Mercedes onboard from last year. Red Bull have got a cracking car there.
lol, 1:27.2s v 1:28.9s
It's how it was handling, not the lap time.

All of the cars are slower because of the floor changes - that's why the floor changes were introduced.
Oh, I’m aware 👍

Let’s not get too carried away comparing the cars though.

Well, that was a great way to start the first qualifying session of the year... somewhat more edge of the seat stuff, rather than seeing a guaranteed Mercedes 1,2.

Stonking lap from Max; The Red Bull really working well this weekend. I think Mercedes will be somewhat disappointed, but they've still got a quick race car and give it a couple of races they'll have it sorted and make it even closer you'd imagine. A pity for Perez not getting through... whilst I doubt he would've been anywhere near close to Max, he definitely could've been Top 4 I bet.

Really nice lap from Charles, snagging 4th... I believe Sainz made a bit of mistake so is several tenths back, but still good to see him him in Q3. If you're a Ferrari fan, you have to be happy with this result compared to the horror of 2020.

Biggest Surprise; Gasly and Alpha Tauri. They look very solid and Tsunoda could've run quite close had he made it into Q3. I thought McLaren might've made more of an impression, but plenty of pace with them. Great to see how close the midfield is going to be!

... and the old fox, Alonso... getting the Alpine into Q3. Yes, might've got a bit lucky with the issues of others today, but credit given to where it is due. Comes back after a couple of years out of the sports and still shows what we can do. Bloody impressive.

Really looking forward to this one!

Yeah I agree. Give him couple of races he'll be there with max. He had 2 laps in Q2 (one deleted) that were both 0.3s off verstappen and that's not all that bad. They should have just sent him out on softs and be done with it.

time will tell. but i doubt if he would do better than albon. his long run pace wasn't anywhere near max. he has some really fast cars ahead of him to make any great progress.

Sigh. The point was that the Red Bull looks settled and Max was able to put it where he wanted it to. That is just like the Mercedes was last year where last year's Red Bull certainly wasn't like that and was a handful for much of the season.

I did, and still support my earlier statement. Not because of his speed, but because I don't want to watch the same people for 20 years straight ;)

All we should care about as race fans is Top 20 drivers in world , fighting it out on race track going side by side. Age is just another bias people have like Race and Religion :D . resting my case here. enjoy the season

So whats tomorrows strategy ?? 1 stop, Medium - Hard ?? In Q2 Merc were quicker than Max, and it seems Mercedes have always been better on the harder compounds rather than the soft tyres.

Story of AT being faster than 2nd RB driver continues.
It’s becoming more than a coincidence
Implying what? RBR sabotaging their own car?
Of course not. Don’t be foolish. More that it’s tailored very much to the needs and style of the lead driver.
