That being said, I don't think McLaren has anything to lose and they should go for it if they got it.
However, I read an article that said that changing the diffuser wasn't so simple as MUCH of the car's aerodynamics needed to be changed to have it work properly.
That might be the reason why so many big teams didn't pursue it yet, it's because it's more complicated to implement than it appears on the surface (or underneath I should say, haha).

I think that's actually the main reason that McLaren have struggled so much thus far. They made the decision early on that the needed to change the cars philosophy to utilise a similar diffuser. That crippled their initial pace and they're now clawing it back. If so then it must have been very painful for them, having to consciously compromise their initial performance whilst they bring the new aero online.
Edit: By early on I mean post launch but relatively shortly after that.
