I haven't taken a proper try at fitting a degradation & fuel model on the long run data yet, but taking Hail22's post at face value, if you did the rough maths - 1:46.3 - 1:44.920 is 1.38s difference. Taking an average fuel effect of 0.102, that leads to around 13.5 laps of fuel difference - enough of a difference to be the difference between first and second stint loads.
Looking back at my notes?

I could have sworn it was 0.2s for Red Bull (vs. McLaren).

Now that I think about it, wasn't first-lap-nutcase flying in that period? He was all the time bellow 1:39, for 13 times, as I read. I wasn't taking those times seriously, so I forgot about them... I read the article again, it said that Vettel went bellow 1:39 for a few times, but did it with ease. Massa went four times and others were low 1:39. McLaren never went bellow 1:39, though.

Interesting. Race sim avgs: Alonso 1:45.588; Massa 1:45.756; Button 1:45.797; Vettel 1:46.172; Raikkonen 1:46.368; Webber 1:46.461;
Not sure why you quoted me...my post is in regards to the "Fastest" lap posted from the race sim laps...however yours are based on the average from the race sim *confused to the reasoning behind quoting me* :? :?
show me please in your post where it says FASTEST?

Lol! I don't archive every single laptime :lol:

But I do conduct some number-crunching after practice - get a feel for how each team is doing in terms of race pace, and how each other team looks in comparison. I note the conclusions I get on tyre deg, fuel effect etc.

I think Ferrari look like they've got genuinely decent pace. I wouldn't expect to see Alonso on pole, but they look a lot more competitive from the very beginning than they have for some races. You can never tell who's doing what in early practices, but one generally gets a decent feel of who's got real pace.

If Alonso can qualify behind only Red Bull cars, I think we could have a very interesting race.

Seems like it must be a really strange car to set-up. Both drivers have had issues throughout the season where setup changes suddenly made the car much worse.

When they get it right, it's super-fast, but it seems to be balanced on a bit of knife-edge.

My thoughts exactly. P3 is the key. I'd then be confident of Alonso being able to out drag Webber at the start (or maybe pass him into turn 2) and take the fight to Vettel.

I didn't catch P2, can anyone tell me if W03 was running their 'device' in P2 as well? I know they ran it in P1...

I saw an interview where a racer (pretty sure an F1 guy, but can't quite remember) said it took just 3 laps to get to know the track. Something like "Lap 1, layout; Lap 2, braking points; Lap 3, On it!" Kimi did say “Since I was very young, I have always been able to pick up circuits very quickly..." so yeah, no problem I would guess.

Interesting in P1 how fast both Ferraris were on tyres that had done early 20 laps. They mentioned how they were working on tyre usage, and they seem to be able to manage it well.

The FP2 times on supersofts are a bit deceptive because the track was still fairly green and Vettel took three laps to set his time. He messed up turn 1 two times before he got a good time on the third or fourth lap. So the difference could be more in qualifying than 0.33 s to Alonso. But Ferrari seems to have found some qualifying time with their updates. I'm looking forward to FP3 to see how it goes at McLaren after they had a bit of data analysis over the night.

When they look at the data, how many things on the car can they change must be loads of settings/angles/suspension, camber list goes on etc
