That being said was it not true that in 2011 or 2012 we were not necessarily sure why the car was fast?

Whereas I get the impression this time we seem to have a much better handle on why we have been quick.

That was a very different McLaren team back then. The McLaren of today is well organised, it has the facilities to make bold design choices then turn them into reality on track and the ability to reflect on mistakes rather than get into a blame culture that was rife at McLaren at the tail end of the Ron Dennis era.

I think people should take a step back and reflect on how far the team has come since Zak Brown was appointed CEO and had to clean up a real mess. He's achieved his goal to be title winning by 2025 one year early. If not for Zak Brown, I'm not sure if McLaren would have survived intact.

Anyway 2026 is the year to be worried about, given the scope of the regulation changes. It should be fine so long as Mercedes produces the goods on the Power Unit front.

There will be a bit extra in prize money (about 30m more than last year) and then likely some bonus payments from sponsors. We'll also be able to get better sponsors and charge more

I don't think we can complain about the lack of good sponsors.

We don't even touch the sides when it comes to sponsorship deals. We have OKX as our biggest sponsor at a reputed 25m per year. Oracle sponsor Red Bull for 90m.

They may well have to be fair. But the space OKX take on the car is worth quite a bit more than it was when we signed the deal, for instance.

That said, who knows how the deals are structured. Perhaps the performance clauses mean the income scales significantly. None the less, we're nowhere near the top of sponsorship incomes yet.

The introduction of just the logo of MasterCard has been interesting. Some sort of "we want to join for 2025 - 202X but gosh it would good to be associated with a championship-winning team". Whatever, the extra income coming in from MasterCard and the prize fund moving up 3 places ($27 Million) will be added to by an increased schedule for those other sponsors staying on. The confidence that goes with winning AND knowing your previous financially precarious situation is well behind will be great for Zak in his role in the big decisions.

It's a huge thing what they have done - the recovery and the sorting out of a team structure and the internal, personal relationships. I'm absolutely confident that the team haven't peaked yet, there was very little luck involved in 2024, to the contrary there was much that can be easily improved on. Like the strategic team will be in for a big shake up. Zak and Andrea work on building their team internally so didn't take to this department with a guillotine. But clearly this will be the biggest area for improvement in 2025.

Again, huge congratulations, this was very deserved, and one of F1 history's feel good stories.

It’s probably the most convoluted structure (at least externally), so there isn’t a clear hierarchy.

I would imagine Rob Marshall has a lot of say on the base platform/concept, but the decisions are probably made with a lot of knowledge share between departments. So I guess everything is tied up together taking into consideration both the mechanical input (Houldey and co) and aero input (Prodromou and co).

Then everyone reports to Andrea Stella who, I assume, keeps tabs on everything and dictates general goals.

McLaren has this “luxury” where their TP is actually a very revered engineer, so he can also provide technical input, albeit perhaps not to the same level as the appointed TDs.

Since Zak is also actively involved with the team (more than you would expect a normal CEO), this helps Andrea focus on the technical side of the role while Zak alleviates his pressure on other duties.
