At least it was just an ordinary miscalculation on the part of MB and nothing as nefarious as the BAR Honda 2004 fiasco where they had a "secret" fuel tank to help scavenging.
If I remember right, BAR wasn't the only team doing that, but they were the ones who got penalized. Call it an innovation or call it cheating, such is F1.
Regarding Mercedes, it sounds like they just flubbed this trying to get as close as possible to the minimum weight. They only had an issue with one car, which is interesting. Maybe it was a botched ballast calculation? I don't know how much both sides of the garage talk with set-ups. I find it hard to believe that running the tires that much longer caused them the issue. At least we know they don't have a problem with chassis weight unlike some other teams.
