More teams have hit trouble in the final day of pre-season testing at Barcelona. At a moment when one would expect reliability issues to be nearly ironed out, the lack of running for some teams was surprising.

Yeah I don't think it would work for McLaren, they are already too big, but if you have a small privateer team with low ambitions and you seem very fast during testing some brand might think: "oooh those guys are fast and their car space is cheap maybe I'll get a lot of bang for buck advertising there". Considering that their car is virtually devoid of any major sponsors I would think they would do anything to get more headlines in hopes of boosting their confidence to the shareholders and potential sponsors. yesterday they grabbed headlines and today if SV can finish high they will grab headlines again. Oh trust me, any serious company will do extensive research first before making a decision about sponsoring a team. They will know. However, for a sponsor the valuable thing is that the team grabs the headlines, getting a nice picture in the article with the sponsor logo clearly visible. So that target does not have to be achieved only through being competitive (although it's still the primary way to do so).
That' what happens when the rules/designs fully mature. Agreed, McLaren have never been out of the head lines - not always for the right reason, but the spotlights & cameras are always all over them. The livery alone has been getting them tons of media coverage.
It's good for Honda that Toro Rosso is able to do that mileage. First because it proves their PU is now reliable, and second because it gives them valuable data, considering that they supply just one team.
