Change of tyre dimensions in 1992 - 93

Post

Does someone can tell me about change of the rules concerning the F1
cars tyres in 1992 - 93? Especially interests exact dimentions of tyres which were used in 1992 and which began to be used in 1993.

Best regards

Check the FIA web site. There is a pdf document for download with all safety changes since the 1950.

I believe that rear tyres were limited on 600mm before they were narrowed by FIA.

F1 tires

Post

duellist,

F1 tires are very interesting. If you've ever taken a look at an F1 tire, you'll have noticed that they have a very tall sidewall profile, at least compared to a high-performance street tire. Most of the suspension travel in an F1 car is within the tire sidewall. Thus tire inflation pressure (and its spring rate) are very critical. Think about that the next time you watch an F1 race.

That is only because wheel diameter is limited on 13 inch by FIA. 13 inch tyres with very short sidewall would have samller diameter and therefore reach much higher RPM - have much greater tyreware (they would have to make more rotations to cross same distance than the tyres we have today).

Rear tyre track was reduced from 18 to 15 inches.

Good year for this change brought out the yellow lable tyres. The previous once where white lable.

was brought in to slow the cars down, the first test we did with the new tyres we found we were quicker which turned out to be due to less air resistance on the smaller tyre

Remember that for 1993 the car width was reduced too. From 215 cm in 1992 to 200 cm in 1993.
