Massa sets the pace
Felipe Massa set the pace at Jerez, on the first day of the final week of testing before Formula 1 breaks up for Christmas. The new Brazilian Ferrari driver, who replaces Rubens Barrichello, was using an air-restricted V10 engine and was quicker than Ricardo Zonta's 2.4-litre-powered V8 Toyota by nearly a second.
Gary Paffett was third quickest for the Mercedes McLaren Team, impressing by outpacing his team-mate Pedro de la Rosa. Nick Heidfeld was fifth fastest for BMW Sauber as the German manufacturer dedicated more time to engine development.
Toyota also gave French rookie Franck Perrera a run. And while he did have a few off track moments, the Euro F3 driver did manage a lap time within 1.5s of team-mate Zonta.
