Hamilton tops first practice in Montreal

Lewis Hamilton topped the times as the Canadian Grand Prix weekend officially kicked off with FP1. Nico Rosberg was second fastest, 4 tenths off the pace while the Mercedes duo proved a comfortable second quicker than Romain Grosjean in the Lotus.

Nico Rosberg became the first man to set a time after Fernando Alonso decided to dive back into the pits just before the final chicane. Lewis Hamilton however soon improved on his team mate, quickly taking charge of the session.

15 minutes later, the stewards confirmed a pit lane speeding fine for Rosberg - a solid €1000 after he hit 91.8km/h.

Following the first installation and reconnaissance laps, nearly all cars remained in the pits as they awaited better conditions. Jenson Button though profited from this to make another installation lap after finding to be stuck in second gear soon after exiting the pits in the first minutes of the session.

30 minutes into the session, action flourished, with Pastor Maldonado soon proving very active. The track conditions however forced many into mistakes, including Bottas, Sainz and Hamilton who all caused yellow flags due to spinning their cars.

At the end of the session though, little conclusions could be drawn, particularly due to the lack of grip that everybody was experiencing.
