Stroll aims to reach Q3, Alonso hopes for mixed conditions

Following a series of tough races in the past weeks, Aston Martin looked more competitive on the opening day of the British Grand Prix, but Fernando Alonso still hopes that mixed conditions will feature the remainder of the weekend at Silverstone.

The opening practice session saw Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso take second and sixth, displaying a much encouraging pace than in previous rounds.

Later in the day, the two drivers gathered data across different tyre types throughout the practice sessions.

The Canadian said that Aston Martin has made several tweaks to its car for Silverstone which seems to have put the AMR24 in a better working window.

"We looked a bit more competitive today, but we know tomorrow and Sunday is when it counts. After Spain and Austria, we changed a few things on the car, so today was spent gathering a lot of data and getting the laps in.

"There’s some homework to do tonight ahead of Qualifying, but the aim will be Q3."

His team-mate Fernando Alonso also looked more comfortable and competitive, but the Spaniard still sounded a negative note when assessing his day behind the wheel of the AMR24.

"It's difficult to read too much into the practice times today with the mixed conditions.

:The wet weather conditions have been a bit more friendly to us this season, so let's see what happens tomorrow," Alonso noted.
