STAT: four different teams with multiple wins for the first time since 1990
Confirming the close competition in the current season, four different teams have already claimed multiple wins so far in 2024, which has happened for the first time since 1990. F1Technical's lead journalist Balazs Szabo delivers an interesting stat before the action resumes at Zandvoort.
Although the start of the 2024 F1 season indicated that Red Bull might dominate proceedings for the third consecutive time, things have dramatically changed since then. The Milton Keynes-based won the opening two races courtesy of three-time world champion Max Verstappen, but the Dutchman retired from the lead at Round 3 at Melbourne.
Capitalizing on the opportunity, Ferrari's Carlos Sainz took his third career victory in Australia. With his commanding win at Melbourne, Sainz, who was the only non-Red Bull driver to win a race in 2023, became the first racer to break the Milton Keynes-headquartered outfit's dominance.
The following two races in Suzuka and Shanghai saw Verstappen return to the top step of the podium, but McLaren's Lando Norris came out on top in Miami to claim his maiden F1 victory.
In Imola, the reigning champion took back the reign to win by seven tenths of a second from Norris, but things changed again when the field headed to Monte Carlo. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc took an emotional victory on home turf, winning the Monaco Grand Prix for the first time in his career.
Verstappen beat his rivals in Montreal and at Barcelona to strengthen his lead in the Drivers' Championship. Although he controlled proceedings at the Red Bull Ring, a mistake during his second pit stop allowed Norris to close in on him. The pair battled it out in the closing stages of the race, but a collision forced Norris to retire from the action while the Dutchman finished down in P5 due to a puncture and damage to his RB20.
The collision allowed Mercedes to clinch their first victory since 2022 with George Russell securing his second career triumph.
His team-mate Lewis Hamilton took a surprise victory in very challenging conditions on home turf at Silverstone, finishing first for the first time since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
The Hungarian Grand Prix saw McLaren dominate proceedings, and following a race-long battle between Norris and his team-mate Oscar Piastri, the Australian crossed the finish line first to secure his maiden F1 victory.
The last race before the summer break saw Mercedes display dominant race pace, with Hamilton securing his second win of 2024 after the disqualification of his team-mate Russell.
It has left Red Bull with seven F1 victories over the course of the opening 14 races while Mercedes have added three victories to their tally. Ferrari and McLaren have claimed two victories apiece.
The close competition of the current season is highlighted by the fact that the championship in 1990 was the last to have witnessed four teams with more than one victory. Back then, McLaren and Ferrari won six races apiece, followed by Williams and Benetton with two victories.
