Formula One announces detail changes for the 2025 F1 season
Following the latest meeting of the World Council, the FIA has announced that the sport will drop the additional point for setting the fastest lap in a grand prix rule from next season.
The FIA has confirmed that drivers will no longer be awarded the extra point for setting the fastest lap of the race. Currently, the driver who sets the fastest race lap receives an additional point if he finishes in the top ten.
The rule was introduced in 2019, and caused controversy at the Singapore Grand Prix. At the Marina Bay Circuit, race winner Lando Norris was on course to take the extra point for the fastest lap next to collecting 25 points for the race win.
However, Visa Cash RB's Daniel Ricciardo snatched the extra point away after the Faenza-based outfit called the Australian in for a late pit stop to take on a fresh set of soft tyres. It meant that Norris, who is the only rival of reigning champion Max Verstappen in the title fight, was unable to close the gap even further to the Dutch driver.
In addition, the FIA also confirmed plans to double the amount of free practice time for young drivers had been approved by the WMSC. The rule tweak means that a young driver will have two opportunities per car to take part in a free practice session from 2025 onwards.
The FIA's statement read: "Minor changes for 2024 and 2025 Sporting and Technical regulations were approved by the World Council, including the removal of the point awarded for setting the fastest lap and the increase in requirement for fielding a young driver during free practice from once per season to two times per season.
