As earlier reported was Gilles Villeneuve honoured in Imola this weekend. To preserve the memory of Gilles Villeneuve, the father of BMW Sauber F1 Team driver Jacques Villeneuve, a plaza in Imola has been named after the Formula One ace.

A corner at the 'Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari' and the circuit of Montreal - venue of the Canadian Grand Prix - have already been named in honour of Gilles Villeneuve, now the Canadian has also been immortalised in the city of Imola.

Gilles Villeneuve was killed in 1982 during the practice for the Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder. In the closing stages of the final practice session, he crashed into the back of Jochen Mass' car and was thrown out of the cockpit. During the course of his career, the Canadian won six Formula One races, with the 1981 Monaco GP being one of them. He is regarded as one of the most charismatic drivers of the 1970s.

"It shows that he's still alive in the hearts of the Italians and that's great," said Jacques Villeneuve in Imola, "I'm very proud of that. In people's minds here my dad was almost Italian and he was everybody's son so it's great to see him remembered like that."
