Alonso leads British GP from start to finish
World champion Fernando Alonso has again, for the fifth time this season, won a GP. He did so on British ground in a rather easy manner. The Spaniard was on pole while even running the longest stint of all front runners. Michael Schumacher is second ahead of Raikkonen and the second Renault of Giancarlo Fisichella. Alonso was never really under threat and led the race from start to finish. Thanks to both drivers, Renault also extends its lead in the constructors championship.
This year's Britsh GP came to a start under a very sunny sky but some drivers will probably not have liked it too much. Not because of the weather, but with the start as Webber and Ralf Schumacher touched in becketts, immediately finishing both men's races and bringing out the safety car. It was Scott Speed who initially hit Ralf without major damage. When Ralf rejoined the track he moved over to the right of the track. Webber was unable to avoid the unexpected move.
The start had been one of the best for Heidfeld as he picked the very inside of the first corner and immediately found himself in 6th place after starting from ninth. Rosberg also did a good job gaining 3 places. Further in the back though, Trulli gained a massive 8 places and found himself behind Button who on his behalf also moved 6 placed up to he front. When the safety car left the track after having led for two laps, everyone maintained his position but it appears as if Alonso is on a slightly higher fuel load. both Raikkonen and Schumacher were able to follow closely.
As if start wasn't even good enough, 5 laps through the race he challenged Liuzzi in Stowe corner and managed to overtake him. Only two laps later Button finds himself stuck in the gravel after spinning on his own trail of oil from his engine. Apparently, the new Honda evolution did not hold and destroyed a so far good for Jenson. Meanwhile, Alonso manages to pull away from Kimi and Michael and is a bit more than 2 seconds ahead of the two after 11 laps. After those two, Massa and Fisichella are following close but behind them a big gap to Heidfeld and Montoya following under his wing.
After 17 laps, Trulli is the first to come in and is followed by M. Schumacher who rejoins the track in 7th place. Just one lap later Massa and Raikkonen go into the pitlane. The finn stays ahead of Michael Schumacher without problems. In lap 21, Fisichella is the first Renault to come into the pitlane and thereby overtakes Massa. Monteiro on the other hand also appears to have put in a very good qualifying as he was equally charged with fuel as Alonso and was through Q1 in yesterday's qualifying session.
24 laps in the race and both BMW's, the Red Bulls and Rosberg did not refuel. Heidfeld was the first of these to do so one lap later but suffered a problem in the pits with his left rear tyre and lost considerable time.
Midway through the race hardly anything changes in the positions. Alonso is around 11 seconds ahead of Raikkonen while Michael Schumacher is trying hard to get close to Finn in order to try to overtake him during the second series op pitstops.
Michael is however the first to come in with 19 laps to go and puts in the fastest second and third sectortime of the race. It's enough to overtake Raikkonen as the latter comes in just one lap later. While Fisichella managed to close in on Raikkonen and put the pressure on, Kimi kept his cool and as a result, positions between the two remained unchanged.
