A great day - Alonso
Three consecutive wins for World Champion Fernando Alonso, who won at Silverstone in front of many of his colleagues from Enstone. Renault celebrated its 200th Grand Prix today and Alonso gave the proper present to his team.
"I started from pole position, which made things easier for me: I got to the first corner in the lead, and I managed to keep the lead from Raikkonen after the safety car period. That was when we knew we had more fuel than them, and it allowed us to manage the gap. The Michelin tyres were very good as well, which is good for the next races, and we didn’t have any problems."
Was Raikkonen a worry at the start of the race?"Kimi was very quick and I had some understeer. Indeed, my car was set up to be quick in the middle of the stints and at the end. So I wasn’t quite fast enough at the start, but I had good top speed and the R26 got better and better with each lap. Gradually, I was able to build a lead and control the race."
So no problems?"Not really. The track was changing a little bit during the race, and you had to work out the grip levels. Plus this is a tough circuit physically, and it was hot. But no problems!"
Is it special to win in Silverstone?"It is fantastic. I won in Barcelona, a special place for me, then in Monaco, a legendary track. Today, it’s Silverstone, a special place in the history of motor racing: to win at these places is like a dream come true. This is an important place too, just 20 minutes from Oxford where I live. It’s a great day."
2006 is turning into an incredible year for you. You have been awesome since Bahrain!"I know, this is an incredible season for me: 5 wins and 3 second places in 8 races! We are running right at the limit, and having no reliability problems, which is just exceptional. We need to continue like this. Our best form of defence will be to attack, and we want to carry on winning races."
What is the secret to the success?"We work hard! And we look at every race like a new challenge. We are developing the car, asking questions of ourselves, and taking nothing for granted. The team is doing a great, professional job at the moment. That’s why we are winning: no mistakes and total concentration… There’s no secret to it!"
