A win in Canada, at last! - Alonso

The Renault F1 Team puts in name on the list of Canada winners after several difficult races in Montreal. Fernando Alonso finished the race on the top scaffold of the podium. Here follows the interview with the winner.

Finally, a Renault win in Montreal. You must be pleased!

"Yes. It's fantastic for me again: six wins in nine races! All the wins are nice, but to get the monkey off our back in Canada is great. Finally, we can add this one to the list!"

Raikkonen was very close to you in the first stint. Was he putting the pressure on?

"Kimi was very, very quick at that point. One lap he was faster, then I was, and I don't know why because I was really pushing hard. He even tried to overtake after I made a mistake in turn 10 and then he was only a second away through the whole first stint."

Was he a threat?

"It was really tough. In the second stint I knew he had mor efuel than me, and that I had to push really hard to stay ahead after the last stop. That meant I made two or three mistakes which cost me some time. There was no point when I could relax today."

Then, when you thought the work was done, the safety car took all your advantage away...

"Exactly! Luckily, I got a good re-start when the safety car went in, built a lead and that was enough."

Was this the hardest win of the season for you?

"No. Without the safety car at the end I had a 25 second lead on Kimi. But what was difficult was not making any mistakes. The track conditions were really hard today, and you couldn't afford to go even a centimetre off line!"
