The gap will be closed quickly - Theissen

German Formula One enthusiasts, in particular, are worried regarding the popularity of the pinnacle of motor racing following Michael Schumacher's retirement. However, BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen believes that Formula One will not suffer.

"Most definitely he will be missed in the first half of the season," Theissen admits, "It will feel strange. On the other hand, there are so many young talents on the grid that the excitement will be even bigger, from my point of view."

With Nick Heidfeld as well as test drivers Sebastian Vettel and Timo Glock, the BMW Sauber F1 Team relies on the services of three German drivers who are regarded by the experts as potential successors to the seven-time World Champion, with Sebastian in particular having caused a stir in 2006. In the past season the 19-year old convinced by being the quickest in several Friday practice sessions.

"History has demonstrated again and again that the gap left by the retirement of a top driver was closed quicker than expected," says Theissen regarding the 2007 season.
