Gigantic step forward - Heidfeld

By on

Currently, Nick Heidfeld is the man of the moment in Formula One racing. In 2007, he has so far managed to finish in fourth place three times. Three times he was able to achieve races free of mistakes and to offer spectacular manoeuvres. In Bahrain, the German impressed the fans when he overtook world champion Fernando Alonso.

From Nick's point of view, lap 32 of the Bahrain Grand Prix is the highlight of the 2007 Formula One season so far. In the previous laps, he had continuously increased the pressure on Fernando Alonso (McLaren) and waited for the perfect opportunity to attack. When this chance arose, the 29-year-old seized it in impressive style.

"I was faster than Alonso, so I tried to stay close to him and wait for a mistake," Heidfeld analyses the situation. "When he made the mistake I was able to pass him on the outside. I already overtook him in Monaco once but this was definitely one of the best moments of my career."

Nick not only thrilled the audience with this manoeuvre on Sunday. The race speed of the BMW Sauber F1 Team driver was also very impressive. During the entire course of the race, he was able to match the speeds of the McLaren and Ferrari drivers.

"I know that everyone is now thinking we're about to take the next step and start to win races," Nick commented. "But we have already taken a gigantic step forward and, therefore, you shouldn't expect too much. I finished in fourth place three times and obviously I want to achieve a podium finish now. When the opportunity comes my way, I will seize it."
