A great day for the team - Theissen
Last Saturday, the "Experience BMW Motorsport" event thrilled 45.000 fans at the Nürburgring. BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen looks back at Nick Heidfeld's spectacular drive on the Nordschleife.
"It was a great day for Nick, for me, for the team and for the many fans at the Nordschleife," said Theissen. "Nick would have enjoyed to complete a few more laps, but I believe we presented the fans with a real highlight."
Lap records and top speeds were of minor interest as the BMW Sauber F1 Team driver completed three laps across the 20-kilometre "Green Hell". The German driver slowed down in certain sections of each lap in order to allow the camera vehicle, which followed him with Jörg Müller behind the wheel, to take unique pictures. "The fans were pleased that this enabled them to see the car for a few seconds longer than they usually would have," Theissen remarked.
During the "Experience BMW Motorsport" event, the fans at the Nordschleife were offered far more than just Nick's impressive ride. In the "BMW Paddock", several successful BMW Motorsport models were on display, such as the BMW M3 GTR or the reigning world champion car BMW 320si WTCC. Additionally, the lucky winners of a raffle were able to experience taxi rides across the track and to take home race gloves signed by Nick.
