Getting closer to the leaders - Fisico

This weekend, the most prestigious race of the season is scheduled, the Monaco GP. Giancarlo Fisichella, the Italian ING Renault F1 Team driver, reckons that he’ll be able to make the most of the weekend thanks to his experience of the Monaco layout.

Fisi, how are you feeling with a few days to go to the Monaco Grand Prix?

"Pretty good thank you! As always there’s a super ambience in Monaco. It’s something really special, a unique weekend. I’m here on my boat with my family. And I love the circuit too. I’ve got great memories from F3 and F1 and I think it’s a place where we’ll be able to get close to the front-runners. There aren’t that many quick corners and I’m feeling optimistic for the race. In addition, we’ve got a new front wing that should give us a bit more performance."

Last week’s test seems to have been very productive, wouldn’t you say?

"I think we’re going in the right direction. We’re beginning to understand the problem and the area where the difficulty lies. We’re working hard every day of the week to find the solution."

But you still need to be patient…

"We’ll have to wait a bit longer, that’s for sure and it’s difficult sometimes. Things will probably go better in the second half of the season. But you know there’s no use complaining; it doesn’t solve anything. You have to face up to the situation, try and get into the points, take full advantage of very opportunity and grit your teeth. Personally speaking, I’ve got enough experience to handle this period."

What life like in the team after four races?

"Things have changed a lot since last year. I’ve built up very solid links with the team. We’ve built up mutual trust and a real desire to push ahead. Heikki and I work well together. He’s quick and that’s what we need. We’re giving 100% for the team and not just for ourselves. It’ll pay off in the end."
