Cautiously optimistic - Fisico
The ING Renault F1 Team’s Italian driver, Giancarlo Fisichella, knows that his car has the latest developments, but he refuses to give in to over-excessive optimism before tomorrow's Canadian Grand Prix free practice sessions.
“Yes, it’s true. We’ve worked very hard on that for the past several weeks, and we made a big step forward in the last two races in Barcelona and Monaco, in particular with the new front wing. We’re concentrating on some specific areas of the car and trying to sort out our problems without getting rattled. We’re working methodically and rigorously.”
Montreal is the first low downforce circuit of the season. Will it suit the R27?“I think so, but it’s difficult to make any predictions before we actually get out on the track. We have to remain cautious. What I can say, however, is that we’re rather optimistic. We’ve got an aero package adapted to the low downforce conditions required here, and the first time we tested it at Paul Ricard, a couple of weeks ago, we were competitive, and I finished second with this set-up. The car’s balance was pretty good too, so it’s an encouraging sign.”
You’ve always been competitive in Canada; will it be the same this weekend?“Well, I hope so! I’ve got a good feeling about this track, as it was where I had my first podium finish in 1997, and I’ve usually scored good results in Montreal. It’s not an easy circuit to learn: the grip’s often very low and stability under braking is crucial for performance. Taking these factors into account I’ve always felt confident here, and I can’t wait to get behind the wheel tomorrow morning!”
