Best reward is a podium finish - Briatore

The ING Renault F1 Team principal, Flavio Briatore, was one of the guests at the official FIA press conference this afternoon. The flamboyant Italian hopes for a podium finish during the team's home Grand Prix.

Flavio, were you encouraged by the performance of the Renault at the Silverstone test?

"I don’t know. Testing is just that, testing. The best reward for a team is a podium finish. Being quick in practice doesn’t really mean a lot."

And what about today?

"On Friday everybody’s on different programmes but we’re pretty satisfied with our level of performance. Our results don’t look great but maybe we had a lot of fuel. I think we’ve closed the gap to the quickest since the start of the season."

What are the team’s ambitions at this point?

"We didn’t do a good job with the R27 at the beginning, there’s no denying it. We developed the 2006 car right up to the end of the season and we’re paying the price today. Our performance is improving bit by bit and I hope that we’ll be on the pace here at Magny-Cours. Being competitive means beating BMW. It’s the same thing where the championship’s concerned. Ferrari and McLaren are in front but we should at least finish third. From now there should be new parts on the car at every race."
