BMW continues to test horn-like flaps
The BMW Sauber continues to test the radical front nose they used for the very first time at Valencia. The horn-like flaps were fitted to Heidfeld's F1.08 for the first time yesterday and this morning the flaps were seen again as Robert Kubica drove out of the garage.
It's not the first time that BMW introduces an innovative aerodynamic part. In 2006, BMW introduced the 'Twin towers' on top of the hub.
While most teams have developed different solutions, the aim is basically the same. The front wing and the nose are absolutely critical in a car's handling, both in straight lines as while cornering. All winglets and flaps ontroduced in that area are therefore designed to help airflow nicely along the nose toward the cockpit area and the rear of the car.
It is crucial to know that neither of these elements tend to create downforce but instead help to improve aerodynamic efficiency of the car as a whole.
