Ten BMW M1 Procars raring to race at Hockenheim
This weekend the German Grand Prix won't be the only highlight at the Hockenheimring. The classic 4.574-kilometre circuit will also be the venue for the return of a legend: the BMW M1 will make its motor racing comeback for two races.
In 1979 and 1980, the BMW M1 Procar Series thrilled the crowds as part of the Formula One support programme. In 2008, this very special series is revived - on occasion of the 30th anniversary of the BMW M1.
Over the course of the Grand Prix weekend, spectators will have the chance of witnessing the ten BMW M1 Procars going out on track twice: the first race with the stunning super sports cars will be contested on Saturday at 10:00hrs CEST (09:00hrs BST) and the second on Sunday at 12:45hrs CEST.
The BMW M1 was the first car independently created by BMW Motorsport GmbH and made its motorsport debut on 12th May 1979 at Zolder in Belgium. In those days, the best Formula One drivers and top stars from other series battled it out with one another in the BMW M1 Procar Series and thrilled the crowds with close, exciting motor racing.
This weekend, the ten BMW M1 Procars will be raced by the likes of Marc Surer, Christian Danner, Harald Grohs, Helmut Kelleners, Josef Manhalter, Dieter Quester and Prince Leopold of Bavaria. Also on the grid will be BMW works driver Jörg Müller and BMW Sauber F1 Team test and reserve driver Christian Klien. Jochen Neerpasch, the Head of BMW Motorsport GmbH at that time, will race the BMW M1 Art Car featuring a livery designed by pop-artist Andy Warhol.
