The fastest lap in day 1 testing last year was 1:30.6. Yesterday Gasly set a 1:33.9. That's 3 seconds slower.

We knew going into 2022 that car performance would drop to 2017 levels. Why are people so shocked?? What were the 2017 testing tines???
That's not 2017 levels. That's 2015 levels.
For Mercedes’ anyways, the others weren’t faster until 2016…😜

- Ferrari side pod depression was an option evaluated
Kind of suggests it wont be a top design choice, if even the F1 working group could come up with it.
It was one of the things they considered a competitive option to test it(apparently, i can't watch the video for being in the wrong part of the world), if it was ridiculously underperforming they wouldn't even try it.

I assume most others, full undercut(it was on the show car afterall), chunky, as small as possible, downwashing... were all tested as possible competitive enough solutions.
What probably didn't occur to them was decoupling the crash structure and having a mostly vertical inlet.

We have to remember just how hot it is there in the day. Most races won't ever be as hot, but a few will no doubt throughout the year.

The F1 working group came up with it as a possibility of how a sidepod might look like - just to show the people that cars in the new regs don't need to look similar to each other. Actually building, making it work and then developing it as a whole concept is a totally different story.
Do you really think that other teams were surprised by the concept of Ferrari? Equally Mercedes' concept was not a big surprise either - not for Ferrari at least as they told that they considered it as well, but then abandoned it and went for their current concept.

Also, I think it's an important point to consider that the cooling layout of the cars have been developed over the course of years. For Mercedes to go the Ferrari route they must have changed their radiator placement significantly. It would have meant changing a concept they've known and which have worked for them for years.
Likewise Ferrari have not just started placing the cooling in the sidepod area. It has been a process of years in which Ferrari have shrunk the area above the sidepods and the airbox itself step by step.

I'm really disappointed by the laptimes so far. They don't seem much faster than the 2014 cars and they behave like boats on the slow corners.
Do you mean they do 7Gs on the slow corners like these boats:

F1 is pathetically slow when compared to this

PS: Btw, word on the street is that Mercedes is insanely sandbagging to not show the vast superiority of the absense of sidepod
Well if they blasted ahead in testing or the early races, theres more change of something being banned. 2014 was very much, take it easy, let the others think they are close. Bahrain 2014 really showed that.
In 2014 it still was apparent to everyone that the Mercedes was shaping up to be the car to beat and especially the Mercedes powered cars looked the best.

Well, after seeing this I can't compare these cars to boats anymore

No doubt this is a glory run to get sponsors. I'd be shocked if haas is genuinely an upper midfield car at this stage

Red Bull was “reasonably competitive without even trying” on the penultimate day of Formula 1’s 2022 pre-season testing, according to its head of race engineering Guillaume Rocquelin.

“It was more of a stop-start day today, mostly by design,” he summed up, with Verstappen logging 86 laps and spending a big chunk of time after the mid-day break in particular in the garage.

“We had a good continuous run yesterday, so today was more about exploring and testing different things. We spent more time in the garage making changes to the car and also taking more risks.

“We learned a lot and gathered a lot of information today. I’m quite happy with what we found out, we are progressing in different directions and it’s all very positive.

“We were reasonably competitive at the end without even trying.”

Why the hell should we care about laptimes?
What we need is racing, instead of a funding contest.
