That’s surely a dangerous way to determine track limits but it sure will work, just need to keep his hand up for the duration of the gp, if the hand ever falls then someone went over the track limit. Easy sensor.

The track isn't wider. The gravel is in the same place. You couldn't driver "wider" even if there were no markings at all. What's likely being done is color contrast to aid with the AI-vision monitoring that they are deploying this weekend.

It's because the car could be all wheels behind the white line, on the kerb, but it would not reach the gravel trap. That would not help preventing the track limits.
So they needed to make the track wider and the white line further out on the kerb, hence they painted it that way.

They probably could not put the new gravel closer to the original white line (bcz MotoGP and what have you).
And yes, the white line moved outwards, so the track is by definition wider, isn't it? If you go behind the white line, your laptime will be deleted as usual, but you will also lose time as you'd run through gravel.

Yes i suppose, the start of the gravel trap could’ve been adjusted inwards though. I guess this is a solution that also works

When you say temporary, are they planning on making adjustments through the wkend? That’s quite tough given it’s a sprint & little time for the drivers to adapt, session to session.

Cause then the curb would be 2m wide just like the car, now curb has been brought back to 1,5m wide so inside wheel is always within the white line unless you put the outside wheel onto the gravel.

The explanation given was that they wanted for all cars this weekend (including junior categories) to be wider than the distance from the white line to the gravel. So that they don't have to police it.

That makes the most sense; all formula cars this wkend get gravel if they exceed the limit.

It’s still quite a weird thing to adjust to I suspect, the track limit line is totally irrelevant for F1. Pilots have to sight the far side/gravel edge for their track limit guidance.
