I really would like to see such a race.
Races starts dry but very quickly it starts to rain.
Alonso get's the first place and Vettel makes a fault and drops out.

However it rains that mucht that they fail by 1 lap to get 75% op the required laps during the 2 hours timeframe. As a result even if Alonse wins the race and Vettel doesn't score one point he will be the winner :-)

Would be a different kind of tension. Alonso being forced to speed up to achieve the required number of laps. :-)

Let's say Hamilton wins from Alonso, with Vettel crashing. That makes Alonso champion with three race wins on the year. Sometimes a lot of talk is made about 'beaten champions,' i.e. when the driver with the most wins does not win the title. However, in a case such as this there would actually be two drivers with more wins than the champion. Hamilton 5, Vettel 5, and Alonso 3.

Has this ever happened before?
Rosberg won with just one win in a sad season with the loss off Villeneuve , Pironis careeer ending clash and a team Ferrari winning the constructors comprehensively with 3 different drivers scoring race wins for them..not forgetting the loss of Paletti who died crashing into the stalled Ferrari of Pironi at the start in Montreal ironically the first time he had qualified for the race (in Imola he was allowed to race only due to the boycott of the garagistes..)

A moot point IMO. The WDC is a championship between driver+car packages. Car reliability doesn't come into how well a driver drove. Agreed. But car speed doesn't either.

The WDC is for all intents purposes, not (and never has been) a measure of how worthy a driver is. It's always been about a driver + car speed - car reliability.

I think it's best to wait for teams decisions in this matter. Driver of the year chosen by the teams, right? Probably the only valid information on that matter...

And they call it a stall. A STALL!

Why do we need some sort of "formal" confirmation of who is the best driver? For some people it may be the guy who wins the WDC while for others an underdog who managed to get a win with a smaller team (such as Maldonado!!!).

There are many reasons, including it being the World Driver's Championship and not the World Driver and Car Combination Championship. Then there is the fact that it's supposed to be a sport and the drivers are the sportsmen. Plus we always talk about how good older generation drivers were, and reminisce about their heroic performances. We talk in terms of drivers battling through the field, drivers pulling off overtaking manoeuvres, drivers making mistakes, drivers putting the car on pole, etc.

Sure we all understand the importance of the car. But like it or not it is the human element that is romanticised and celebrated, and because of that people like their world champion to be the best and most deserving driver on the grid. Rightly or wrongly people also like their champions to have overcome hardship in order to battle through and win, it's a basic part of story telling - the stuff of fairytales. Regardless of whether or not you feel it applies to this year there is something a whole lot less impressive / inspiring / romantic / etc. about the second or third best driver coming first because of a built in car advantage where their competitors never stood a chance.

What I meant is, everyone of us should have enough proof by now to make an informed decision on who was the best driver this year..

The only way for all to agree on this would be if they were all driving the same car. Still, the element of luck could have affected performances.

I'd love to see Alonso win this somehow, but I have enormous respect for Vettel, Hamilton and Kimi as well. I've seen enough to accept they're all top drivers and none of these guys really have anything to prove to anyone.

Yeah, I get where you're coming from. People have an in built desire for confirmation of their beliefs, hence the need for everyone telling each other their opinions and wanting everyone else to agree.

If someone said to me that you can have three wishes, my first would have been to get into racing, my second to be in Formula 1, my third to drive for Ferrari.
