Why are they carving away at the tire like that? Never seen that before.
Is it just pick-up and excess build-up rubber they are peeling off?

I've seen them do it plenty of times post-race, they're just cleaning off pickup so they can get samples and measurements definitely from that tyre.

Regarding the scraping of the tire - They do that in order to clean the debris and see the wear pattern of the tire or to get the tire clean for another run.

It's called scrubbing the tyres and as has been said it's to clean off the loose and worn surface to get better performance from the first laps when the tyre is used again.

Seem to be quite odd tires this year. Lock-ups before would just sort of create a flat surface on the tire but now it looks like they are giving birth to something.
Bit odd seeing Chilton´s rear lock-up patch as well.

Also interesting hearing from Newey saying the better the car (more downforce), the less tire longevity.
And that Red Bull and Mercedes wants Pirelli to go back to 2012 spec tires.

The best car is the one that goes the necessary distance as fast as possible with the available tires (as it is with the available fuel, oil, construction materials, etc). It has always been like that.
If doing that requires a whiff less downforce, it requires a whiff less downforce.

In the 50s the key element was engine power, in the 60s was low drag and agility, in the 70s it became downforce, in the 80s engines again, in 2003-2005 it was tires (in particular their brand), and now it is probably turning towards efficiency.

My opinion: F'ing ridiculous if that's the state of affairs. To have to intentionally de-tune your aero package because the tires can't be driven that fast... ridiculous. Slap in the face to the identity of F1, or racing in general. Again, IMO.

I´m for the Pirelli-show but when it´s to that point it starts to get a bit ridiculous frankly.

the better car you build the worse it is. that´s completely backwards.
If you take it to the extreme HRT would be winning races because they generate lift instead.
