€1.25m seems a low price for some 500 F1 tyres and one support engineer all year long. You also have to consider the supply of wind tunnel scaled tyres and other services that the tyre supplier provides to the teams. But all of this is nothing compared to the money Bernie charges for the advertising. It costs Pirelli over $30m if my memory serves me right. And part of that money goes back to the teams.

I remember Michelin quoting higher figure when they were considering staying in F1, here it says they initially wanted 5M, but dropped it to 1.5M. I think I even saw a figure as high as 10.5M mentioned...

If WB is correct with his 500 € per tire assumption, this means 2500 tires per team, which I very much doubt.

Even including service and assistance, each tire must be a lot more than 500€?

Each team goes through about 2000 tyres per season including those for testing and those taken to races but not used which are destroyed anyway, so WB's guess wasn't far off.

Obviously a correct figure. I forgot to multiply by four and only counted the sets when I got 500 tyres per team. 2000 is the correct figure. I agree with that. In that case the price indeed makes sense.

Yes indeed, I hate it when things doesn't add up, but let's see now, 2000 tires per season means some 12-13 sets per car and race, I guess that's reasonable too. But the logistics of shipping 1000 tires to each race is mindboggling, though I take it they can make F1-tires pretty flat when not inflated, does anyone has info on how this is technically done?

But 500€ for a tire that lasts 30 minutes at best, good lord what a waste, not xactly the green-image they are talking about.

If you compare it with LMP1 it becomes even more obvious. They run their Michelins triple and sometimes quadruple stints of twelve laps over two hours. F1 is all show when it comes to tyres. Artificial!

It's ironic that LMP1 focuses on efficient technologies - whether it's energy/fuel efficiency or tyre efficiency, so much so that the driving becomes an exercise in flat-out racing, whereas the opposite is true in F1.

Flat out racing? Nobody wants to see flat out racing. They want to see a show, dammit.

2013 Le Mans was certainly a tightly fought contest that did not allow the leading Audi and Toyota cars much complacency or rest. There was no tactical driving if you disregard some effort by Audi to stretch the stints to eleven laps. Other than that it was flat out from the start to the chequered flag. The tyres were certainly not limiting the drivers to exploit all the performance they could get. One hopes that 2014 it will be the same again for F1.

When you read an interview with Pirelli's CEO where he cheerfully admits that MrE asked them to make crappy tires in order to spice up his otherwise dull show, a "show" which basically is aimed solely at the yelling banner-men and half-naked beer-guzzlers.
Then it really makes you wonder over the future of F1, doesn't it?

As for myself, the only thing that brought me bck to F1T was the thread on next year's engines, it's just it's gonna all even out in 2015 anyway, when all the available excitement will be miniscule aerodynamic tweaks and unpredictable tires by Pirelli.

See and learn how to stay OT gentlemen.

But how much faster over a lap could they be at le mans if have didn't have such 'conservative' tyres? The tyre life at le mans is dictated by the pit stop rules. If you could have Formula 1 style pitstops in sports car racing, I doubt they much Michelin would bring tyres that lasted more than 12-13 laps of Le Mans.

Someone posted it here, but I cannot recall where, but it was just a week ago or less.
