Scuderia Ferrari SF15-T

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Didn't seem to be the biggest problem in other places like Sepang where Vettel was the fastest/cofastest on S1/3 but was almost 0,6s down on Rosberg's S2(Vettel only used Primes on Sepang's qualifying). Previously, Ferrari's biggest gap was on downforce sectors. In Barcelona, it turned out the opposite. They were no more than a couple of tenths down on S1/S2(where the mid-high speed corners are) but 0,45s down on S3

Before Barcelona, I was expecting Ferrari to be a real threat in Monaco but, now, I think Mercedes will easily walk again.
This is indeed strange. Kimi in the old configuration in his fastest S3 was much faster than Vettel. Edit: And in Qual, he was on par with Vettel in the last sector, but losing heavily in S1 and esp. in S2.

How can you improve Aero and in the same time losing on slow traction bits of the circuit, I wonder?
Has the new aero changed pressure center, and required much different settings, eg. stiffer rear suspension, worsening traction?
Hmm maybe track conditions changed or driver differences. Arrivabenne said the updates were indeed working much better than the old parts during the race.

The team has said the numbers prove the updates were working. In the heavily aero dependent parts of the track the updated car worked well and better than the old configuration. S3 could be down to each driver but it's possible that with the updates the car has better downforce but the updates are new so the team hasn't had time to fully dial in/optimize the setup, whereas with the old config the setup is definitely optimized and the low speed traction and mechanical grip work previously done showed. I think they just need time to optimize the setup of the new updates.

Looking (again) at a few Raikkonen's onboards, it seems the car had too much understeering.
Maybe they tried to compensate with more front wing but probably that exacerbated the rear instability.

If I had to say something about the engine, I'd say it looks like a bit too "pointy" compared to Mercedes, which seems more smooth and constant in power delivery.

If you're talking about race sector times, kimi was on the softer compound at the end of the race (when fuel was lowest) whereas Seb was on the hards. I'm pretty sure all kimi's best sector times were faster but it's for this reason.

As you say, in quali s3 the same but much slower in 1 and 2; shows no negative effect of updates but positive in high speed stuff.

This weeks Barcelona test will surely allow Ferrari to optimize the new aero package and updates.

Ok, a question from someone not as knowledgeable as all you good folk.

I'm really enjoying learning about the way the aerodynamics work, and flow vis is my friend because it gives me a visual reference to a lot of the things discussed here.

I found this picture a little puzzling though.

From what I can see they only applied the flow vis to the rear wing.

What would cause the, (for want of a better description), droplets or spattering on the bodywork above and in front of the exhaust ?

It's apparently not the tidiest stuff to work with.

At a guess, the flow-vis was applied significantly upstream of the rear wing. To me, it doesn't look like it's been directly applied there. My bet is it's been applied to the leading edge of the side pods.

I think they have applied flow vis on the floor before the rear wheels also (possibly a new strake in there?), as pictured in forza's quote below. Maybe it has spattered onto the rear of the engine cover during the lap.

Could be a different driver/lap, I'm not sure, would take a closer inspection, but just a possibility.
