I personally think this might be a close race. Can't wait till Saturday! I think one of the Mercedes will be on pole, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Vettel splitting them...

Manoah2u wrote: Though these figures reasonably come from thin air, it was suggested last year the Ferrari unit was what, 70hp down on the Merc engine? I think that was quite excessive, but if it would be around or less true, and if Merc had not improved this year power-wise, and Ferrari already started with a closer power figure and now is able to improve 30 hp, it would mean they are suddenly much closer.
If they can do this with only 3 tokens, what they can do with the rest? 200hp more? it makes no sense for me.Sevach wrote:That sure is incredible from 3 measly tokensPhil wrote:So James Allen is reporting that Ferrari have supposedly gained ~30hp with the new PU, which they will be using in Canada.

Great find, thanks! Bu there were only two teams racing... Too bad I think. Events such like these are important and there should be more of these. They show that the whole F1 thing is fun and entertainment.bdr529 wrote:They stopped doing it for a few years, don't remember when, but I'm sure they did it 3 or 4 years ago

If we go by renault's Remi Taffin from some years ago 80 bhp is worth ~2s of laptime round monza. So that's around 0,75s benefit for 30 bhp increase. Canada is somewhat less power dependant (but still a lot) compared to monza, so I'd say 0.5s is in the realm of possibility IF 30 bhp rumours are to be believed (unlikely). And that is a lot imo.Manoah2u wrote: I'm not sure 30 hp is all that much though. Sure, it'll help by a good margin

It will be interesting to see how much closer the new Ferrari power unit brings them to the Mercedes cars. The gap in qualifying has been around 7/10ths of a second and there should be around 3/10ths in the power unit upgrade, if the indiscretions on the extent of the update are accurate. The gap in races, however has been less (apart from Spain, where Ferrari struggled with the tyres)
Most of that is in the tires.. Ferrari is notoriously bad on harder compounds.. therefor the gaps increase in races which include the harder compounds..godlameroso wrote:Ferrari is down about .5-1.2 seconds per lap slower than Mercedes depending on the track, so if they can shave .3 off their deficit, they'll be a little closer, they need to improve by another half second relative to Mercedes to be competitive.
Obviously I gave a rough estimate. 3/10 seems on the low side tbh, considering old 80bhp kers was worth 3-4/10 in a measly 6.7s.GPR-A wrote:FERRARI HOPING TO CHALLENGE MERCEDES WITH 30HP BOOST FROM NEW DEVELOPMENT ENGINE - JamesAllenonF1Juzh wrote:If we go by renault's Remi Taffin from some years ago 80 bhp is worth ~2s of laptime round monza.
