Looking at the pictures I donโt see any quick release mechanism for the Halo. Is there any? Without it looks very hard for marshals to tend the driver and extract him with the Hans system.
also impossible to quick release when they crashed and the car flipped upside down
Overturned cars and the need to get out fast have been mentioned a lot in reference to the halo and cockpits, and it seemed to have played a large role in the design. Is it really that important nowadays?
Surely cars flip no less than in the past. But the chances that you end up in a fireball or on the bottom of a harbor are a lot lower. So I donโt see the need to be able to get out fast as urgent as it was in the days the drivers were strapped inbetween two non-sealing fueltanks, and the nearest extinguisher could be 1/2 hour away.
If the solution is not elegant then the problem is usually stated wrongly. The escape time is IMO what overconstrains this thing, and I wonder what the solution space would be opened up if we dropped that requierement and kept to the basic functions.
Protect from intrusion of debris in the cockpit.
Protecting arms and hands in rolls
Providing a quick acess possibility for the responders to do basic stabilization tasks.
I suspect that would open up much more aesthetically pleasing and aero neutral solutions without compromising on safety.
