McLaren MCL34 speculation thread

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

They're moving more cooling into the upper chassis area, in fact I'd expect most teams to move more up there too this year even for the guys that were already doing it, as the rear wing being taller and wider means you disrupt it less, and you want to drive over the top of the diffuser harder to link the flow with the wing more than last year.
I wonder if both Mclaren and Renault will go for Rb14 style packaging given its relative success.
I think McLaren would do well to adapt Red bulls concepts in a number of area's of there car, I will be very surprised if we don't at least see much more aggressive sidepod design and a Larger airbox for improved cooling something they had issues with in pre-season before.
Yeah, both McLaren and Renault had very bland and simple looking sidepod designs last year. I'm wondering if McLaren is going to ditch having those six fins on top of the sidepods.

Probably if they can keep the flow attached at the waist without them this year (with the revised bargeboards, pushed back intakes + longer wheelbase)

Longer wheelbases have been the talk of the town lately. The pushed back intakes are probably the cause of this. So the sole purpose of those fins was for downforce, right?

It was to energise the flow over the sidepod to keep it attached and make sure it rolled over underneath to feed the floor.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation!

Some internals I’m guessing. They put gold on some inside parts of the car for thermal reasons

You're right, to reflect heat. This is probably near the oil tank, aft the monocoque.

Would have been a nice color for the actual paint job

you sure this is not the paint job? It seems too orange to be gold

Probably a bit of reflection off the orange team colours the guys are wearing as well.

Quick hue shift in PS by +10 shows a more natural image, i'd pressume the image had some colour tweaks before upload on their end.
