“But the engine is a good step. It is encouraging to see that Renault is bringing updates.”
Seidl explained that McLaren chose not to run the B-spec in France because it felt that running it in Paul Ricard would virtually guarantee the need for another change later in the year.
“In the end, how the regulations are, you need to make a plan of how you’re going to use your engines throughout the season in terms of the modes, mileage and so on to avoid penalties,” he said.
Seidl confirming the B-spec is a good step, which supports Nico’s 2 tenths claim. This is more reliable than Sky’s nonsense half a tenth statement.
It’s also possible race pace could be considerably better than what they showed. We’re definitely not quick enough to fight Red Bull, Ferrari etc, so makes no sense to push the engine and score the same points. They’re trying as much as possible to maintain the PU life and integrity, so they can decide when best to take the engine and reduce risks of more penalties at the business end of the season.
