'We are ready' - Alonso

Only 2 days to go till the official start of the new Formula One season in Bahrain, when the drivers will have to give their best during the new qualifying format. At this weekend’s official press conference, the World Champion left nobody in any doubt as to his motivation this weekend.

Interview with Fernando Alonso

Fernando, what has changed compared to last year?
"Nothing. Absolutely nothing! Actually, one thing: I have the number one on my car. It’s like my dream has come true. And I will do the maximum to keep it there."

Do you approach this weekend any differently compared to 2005?
"In one sense, yes. Until now, I arrived at the first race hoping that we had a competitive car, and that we could fight for the podium and some wins. Now, I want to go for the title. That’s quite a big difference, and I am also more confident in myself because I know I can do it."

Is the R26 the car you need to defend your crown?
"I think so. We have been competitive in testing and we are ready for the first race, but we will only know what shape we are in after practice. All the drivers will be doing their maximum as soon as they are on the track. There won’t be any Sunday drivers!"

This is your last season with Renault. Does it change your approach?
"Not at all. I want to be champion again, and I will do everything I can to make it happen. I want to win, just like the whole Renault team. I am more relaxed this year as well: my future is certain, and I can concentrate 100% on my driving. So there’s no problem."

There are also new V8 engines this year. How much slower do you think the cars will be?
"It is hard to say. We will have softer tyres and qualifying will now be with empty tanks. So some of the times might be faster than they were in 2005…"
