It hasn't sunk in - Alonso
The Spanish Renault F1 Team driver, Fernando Alonso, won his second consecutive world title yesterday afternoon in Brazil. He provided Renault with a beautiful going away present as the team took the double.
"I cannot describe the emotions. I think I will need some time to understand what’s happened. I am 25, I am champion for the second year in a row, and we have won the constructors’ title for the second time… it’s amazing. This is also my last race with Renault after 5 fantastic years. There’s a lot of emotion this evening."
How was the race?"I didn’t have any problems and the race was pretty straightforward. I made a good start and the team then asked me to turn the engine down after only a few laps. I didn’t understand what was going on until they explained Michael was 19th with a puncture. Then I got past Raikkonen at the stops, and settled in behind Massa. That was when I started to manage the race."
Were you relieved to see Michael have problems?"Not really because anything could still happen, there were more than 60 laps left. I didn’t lose concentration but I spent the race looking after the car. When I was fighting with Button, for example, I would have let him pass if he had really threatened. But in the end, I had a straightline speed advantage on him."
So you didn’t relax before crossing the line?"I had to finish in the top 8. That might have sounded easy, but there were lots of potential traps. For example, there was a lot of debris on the track and a puncture was a real possibility."
You are champion again. Did you doubt you could do it this year?"No, never. There were some difficult moments when I had penalties I did not understand, but I always knew we could do it. We had the car to win, and the determination to finish the job."
Who are you thinking about this evening?"The team and I want to thank them. They have been my family in Formula 1 for 5 years. The test team, the factories at Viry and Enstone, our partners at Michelin and Elf, Heikki… They are the people I am thinking of at the moment."
