Both drivers just need to keep their cars intact at the start. Even if they lose 1 or 2 places, I expect both Mclarens to be P1-P2 by lap10. Qualifying position doesn't matter in this track. The effect of tow from the car ahead and the length of track available after T1 until T5, is huge. IMHO, McLaren made the correct choice going for skinny wing, they anyway have tyre deg advantage.

I sometimes wish they would give them orders not to fight at the start instead of that stupid stuff about only fighting for 2/3rds of the race

I’m usually a pessimist, although it could have gone better today I’m optimistic for tomorrow, the wet weather played to the others more today, Mclaren should come to the fore tomorrow
Andrea and Oscar confirming my thoughts.
Red Bull are quick though. Max will still be a huge threat too
What did they say?
Basically what Stella says in the link Lusion posted.
Norris was down beat after quali probably because Oscar is faster than him this weekend

Did they end up using the low df wing from fp1?

I’m no expert but I believe the wing itself has been always the same it’s just the size of the lower beam wing, I think they decided to use the biggest beam wing they brought to this event

As Norris and Piastri settled for fifth and sixth in Q3, team boss Andrea Stella said McLaren made sure not to compromise its race day performance by adding too much downforce for Saturday's wet conditions, hoping his drivers can cash in on that decision in what is expected to be a dry grand prix.

Just cranking downforce might not work as there will be such a material difference in the dry race tomorrow that those cars with excessive downforce may suffer. So it is the balance. Basically, what DF do you think will get you round the track safely, is probably the right downforce.
Seems they added the minimum to keep them in the mix, as predicted

Let me clarify. McLaren chose a new rear wing for low downforce, and a single-deck beam wing for medium downforce. This is the option used in the second practice and is considered the best in the race. The race simulation confirms this. It is not a big deal that McLaren did not perform well in qualifying. This is a minimization of losses in order to be very fast in the race. The race promises dry weather, and the simulation shows that McLaren and Red Bull are the fastest in a dry race.

McLaren has three variants of the single-deck beam wing. The most loaded variant, with a large area and attack angle, the middle variant - a smaller area and a smaller attack angle, and the most unloaded variant - the minimum area and the smallest attack angle. In the second practice, in qualifying and the race, the second variant was chosen as the most balanced for Spa.

Thanks. I thought they brought 3 variants of the beam wing- just didn’t know which one of the 3 they chose.

Do we have shots of the car from qualifying?

Norris suggests only "slightly lower" downforce. Suggests they added some. Curious to see where and how. Unless it was to the front only.

I have it from the third practice. I didn't see any changes in the rear. I didn't really look at the qualifying, maybe there wasn't even a good plan. I don't remember anymore, to be honest.

From what the team and Lando said, I think there is something, curious to see. But perhaps they might have only dialled up the front as the rear was already decent.

I never know where to get the decent in session pictures.

As far as I can tell, I don't think the team changed the car's configuration. According to Lando on Friday, the car has speed, but he wasn't very comfortable behind the wheel. It's enough to tweak the settings a little bit to make him feel more comfortable. It's unlikely that this requires changing the configuration and specification.
