As said before, the ICE will not change that much for 2026, I don’t see many risks there
Well its not necessary they change but they could. The min. weight is lower so teams would want a more efficient and lighter PU. A more powerful ICE can significantly reduce the limitations expected with significantly higher percentage of battery power.
They're not having problems meeting weight now? RBR said they were 20KG over weight the first year of current regs. You don't think if they could have made the PU lighter, they wouldn't have? Hell, most cars ran without paint!

Weight is time in F1 So everything is as light as can be. Even being under weight is an advantage. It allows you to put ballast exactly where you need it to improve handling.

in 2026 everyone is talking about power units, but at least in the beginning weight will be just as big of an issue for teams. theyve lowered the minimum weight but with the larger battery cells theyll be carrying its highly likely that teams will be well above that for a while. if one team can get on top of that before the others theyll have a big advantage. hopefully honda has some tricks up their sleave concerning the batteries weight

And improvements happen constantly with time. So it doesn't mean it can't be lighter. There has been an engine freeze since 2022. There is always possibility of improvement.

Be interesting to see if they stay with split turbo. Certainly that is one way to save weight. Presume that there are still a power and packaging benefit for isolating the compressor from the turbine.

FIA decided to ban split turbos so it will be traditional:

Article 5.5.5 of 2026 tech regs:
The maximum distance between the rear of the compressor exducer and the front of
the turbine inducer (E) will be 175mm

Didn't know that.
It's gonna be a mess. The air will have to go over the PU to get to the compressor. From there it's sharing space with the exhaust but it still has to go through the intercooler and get back to the top of the PU to get to the intake.

I dont know if this was posted elsewhere but a nice video that gives some insight as to why so many teams have had correlation issues and some of the complexities of wind tunnel testing which get amplified on ground effect cars.

Yes I was talking about it at 27 Sep 2024, 10:09. You can look back ...

"Two or three years", so 2025 (1) and 2026 (2) at least. Maybe 2027 (3) possibly.

That is good to hear. He seemed to be speaking less and less about the future previously..

Andy Cowell starts working today.

I am not so worried about Newey, his ideas will find the way to the team. More worried about "organizer" Cardile, who only joins before the summer break in 2025 according to media. A bit late.

Bueno.
I always had that feeling that if the 2026 car had potential (engine and chassis), there is no way Alonso wouldn't want to stick around for another season. Glad he confirmed it.
